I’ve yet to read a Chicken Soup for the Soul book that I didn’t like. Their “Family Matters – 101 Unforgettable Stories About Our Nutty but Lovable Families” also did not disappoint. This book was a fun, easy read, with lots of stories about the quirky things that make our families special.
With a generous shake of humor and some dashes of seriousness and sentimentality, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Matters gives us little doses of real-life situations that serve as great reminders of just how important family is. Many times while reading some of the 101 short stories by various authors, I found myself laughing, and sometimes tearing, as authors gave me a glimpse into their own families’ embarrassing moments, favorite childhood memories, challenges raising children, and difficult times that taught them how important family is.

We’re All in this Together!
My parents, like so many others in their age group, were raised with the understanding that “family issues” were not to be discussed outside of the family. The theory was that it wasn’t good for those outside of the family to know of our trials and tribulations. The truth is, of course, ALL families face struggles and issues that shake them to their core. Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Matters is proof of that. Each of the stories inside help us to see that our triumphs and challenges as families are not unique – we’re all in this thing we call life together!
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Matters – a Nice Addition to Your Bed-Side Table, or a Great Gift Idea!
I have to admit, I’m not one of those folks that always has a novel sitting next to her bed. Truth be told, I’m usually too darn tired by the time I get into bed to delve into a complex plot line. For me, Family Matters is a perfect option — each chapter contains a great selection of short stories — all just a few pages long. I enjoyed thumbing through one or two of the stories, having a few laughs, and then being able to call it a night. No guilty feeling of not having read on to finish a chapter! 🙂
I also think this book makes a great gift idea. Ever had to buy a gift for someone whom you didn’t know well, or whom seemed to have everything? Dilemma solved! Who wouldn’t enjoy reading some stories about families, just like theirs, that, even during hard times, learn to realize how blessed our lives are just by having our family members in it!
