Last year, my son began to read in Kindergarten. This year, in first grade, it’s all about reading! There are plenty of resources available for beginner readers. One that I have enjoyed sharing with Elijah is the series by ZonderKidz called I Can Read! There are 5 levels through ZonderKidz. The first level is called “My First” and is for emergent readers. The next level is 1, for Beginner Readers. It uses simple sentences for eager new readers. Then it goes to levels 2-4, ending in chapter books.
We were able to review 3 Level 1 I Can Read books by Zonderkidz. The Prodigal Son, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, and Jesus Raises Lazarus.[slickr-flickr tag=zonderkidzicanread]
The first book that Elijah learned to read was The Prodigal Son. This was exciting for me because my son was reading his first Bible story on his own. It was especially meaningful when he was so excited that he wanted to call his grandpa to read it to him. My dad is a retired pastor. When we would go to a new church, he often would preach the story of The Prodigal Son. It was one of his favorite sermons as the message reaches people at all levels. My dad was so excited to hear my son read this book to him.
Finding books that your kids enjoy reading is crucial when it comes to giving them the joy of reading. My son has enjoyed reading the Zonderkidz books as they are mostly familiar stories that he has learned at church.
