Teach Programming by Making Cool Games

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.  All STEM skills that rely on computers to do the heavy lifting. Like it or not, computer programming is going to become an essential skill in the not so distant future.  Whether you want to change how your blog looks, works, or feels, or indeed, you want to change the world.

I am proud that my son has a great interest in the study of living things, and he is better at math than reading.  If I had to pick one that he would be better at, Math would have been it.  Now, here’s the hard part- taking and applying his desires into something productive.  Can it be done?

Maybe with SCRATCH.

I received a copy of the book to facilitate this review.

The Super Scratch Programming Adventure (version 2) is a well designed and beautiful introduction into the SCRATCH visual programming language.

The book includes comic books, plenty of screen captures, and short-snippet sized paragraphs describing what is being presented, and what is being asked of the reader/student.  The software presented in this book is free to use- and is on the MIT presented website here.

My husband has a few things to say about the similar book HE purchased in a long forgotten…decade.

I am a nerd.  With my birthday money I purchased a book and software on computer graphics programming at the age of 9 in 1984 called SmartLOGO for the Coleco ADAM computer at what was a Children’s Palace in Cleveland.

Wanna see what my husband is comparing this to?

The newly revised edition of the Scratch Programming Adventure includes plenty of images, clear instructions, and concepts that although can seem difficult, can be brought together to allow a child to CREATE.  This isn’t Minecraft folks- this is computer programming that gives your child a leg up.

The comics and well organized content keep the reader’s attention, and does its teaching in small, goal oriented snippets.scratch-comic

Did I tell you that SCRATCH allows you to record your own voice, and use your own imagery to create video games and graphics?  Click here to see examples of what kids use SCRATCH for!scratch-gem
