New books at Christmastime is always something my family looks forward to each year. I pack them away with our Christmas decorations every year and my kids are always so excited to get their books out the next year. This year, we added two kids Christmas books fom Albert Whitman & Company.
The Christmas Pups Review
We love to snuggle up on the couch to read. The Christmas Pups is written by Teresa Bateman and illustrated by John Kanzler. This delightful story takes the reader on a Christmas story journey of 3 puppies and an older dog. For ages 4-8, it was a delightful book that held the interest of both my 5 year old girl and 7 year old boy. They were glued to the story!

The story is all about 3 puppies that had a bad start of being dropped off by the side of the road on Christmas Eve in a cardboard box. Don’t worry, the story gets happier! They are found and taken to a shelter where they meet a kind, older dog who explains about how Christmas is coming and people like puppies for Christmas presents. The 2 male puppies were looking out for their sister and were naughty when people came by in hopes that their sister would be chosen for Christmas. I’ll spoil the surprise ending since I don’t think many kids are reading this review! In the end, all 3 puppies got to stay together AND the older dog was given the same home to a family living on a farm! What an enjoyable book to read!

What Am I? Christmas
What Am I? Christmas by Anne Margaret Lewis and illustrated by Tom Mills is a fun lift-the-flap book. For kids ages 2-5, it was just right for my 5 year old girl. I wasn’t sure if she would still enjoy lift-the-flap books since most of hers are smaller and for younger kids. I was so happy to see her so delighted to lift-the-flap on ALL the pages! She went through the entire book and checked out all of the pages before she’d even let me read it to her.

This book gives kids hints of what is under the flap and then ask, “What am I? What could I be?” on each page. Then, you lift-the-flap to see the Christmas theme item under it. My daughter knew what most items were but I think it would be more of a surprise for younger readers.
