If you have read any of my other game reviews, you know I love a game with purpose – why not have fun AND learn at the same time? ThinkFun has “intelligent fun” down to a science – it’s the reason they are one of my favorite game manufacturers. ThinkFun recently previewed their newest game of logic, Laser Maze. I received a copy of the game in order to facilitate this review.
Let’s face it: learning the ins and outs of basic scientific principles isn’t always exciting. But if one can add a healthy dose of fun to the equation, kids stay engaged longer, and learn without even realizing it. Such is the case with Laser Maze by ThinkFun.
I should first explain that logic games are FAR from my soon-to-be sixth graders favorite. Usually, she gets frustrated after a short time, and just gives up. But logic is an important skill, so we keep working away at it. Last week, she had a friend over, and they were looking for something fun to do. I asked them to try out our new Laser Maze game, and they obliged.
Though designed for one player, Alyssa and her friend had fun taking turns playing Laser Maze – one girl worked on solving the beam-bending challenge, while the other girl held onto the answer, and checked the set-up to see if it was correct. Then, they switched roles.
The basic concept of this game is this: match the pattern on the challenge card by setting up the tokens on the game grid. Manipulate the tokens, some of which have mirrors or beam splitters, and check to see if the laser beam hits the target as arranged. If not, go back to the drawing board, and rearrange the tokens to hit the target. The cool part is, players check their set-up by pushing down on the laser token, and seeing if the beam actually travels to the target.
Much to my surprise, the girls played this game non-stop for almost an hour! Even more amazing was that Alyssa was actually enjoying herself, even though the challenges weren’t always easy. Hooray! I think getting to check their work with the actual laser beam added a layer of excitement to this game, and kept the girls wanting to play more, and progress through the deck of challenge cards that range from beginner to expert challenges.
We’re looking forward to many more hours of fun playing this great game AND exercising the logical-thinking part of our brains. Thanks, ThinkFun!
