Growing up in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park has shaped my deep appreciation for natural beauty. Whether I am exploring the Wayne National Forest near Ohio University or trekking through the Smoky Mountains, I am always looking for that next “magical” outdoor moment. On our recent trip to Tennessee, we found exactly that at Ober Mountain.

As soon as we stepped onto The Gatlinburg Tram, I was blown away by the scale of the operation. This isn’t just a ride; it is a massive cable car that whisks you high above Gatlinburg, offering a stunning perspective of the Southern Appalachian hardwood forest. It felt worlds away from the busy streets below, providing the kind of “escape” I’ve always valued in my own hometown of Peninsula, Ohio.

The Experience: Views Without the Fear

One of the coolest parts of the tram is the sheer size—it can hold up to 120 people although we basically had it to ourselves during our visit! We loved that the cabin was spacious enough to walk around and take in the views from every single angle. Seeing the counter-bound tram pass us halfway through the journey was a highlight that really showed off the engineering behind this iconic system.

Even though we visited in the late winter/early spring transition, the views were absolutely breathtaking. You can see the transitions in the plant life as you gain elevation, which is fascinating for anyone into botany or forest ecology like I am. I can only imagine how gorgeous the vibrant greens of summer or the fiery oranges of fall or snow covered winter would look from this height.

Perfect for Every Explorer

The tram is a fantastic option for families with young kids or for those who might be a little nervous about traditional, open-air ski lifts. You get all the “stunning” views of the Great Smoky Mountains with the peace of mind of being in a secure, enclosed cabin. It’s a smooth, comfortable way to reach the summit without any stress.

Practical Details:

  • Ages: Perfect for all ages, from toddlers to grandparents.

  • Frequency: Departs every 20 minutes, so you are never waiting long.

  • Value: This experience is included in the Ober Mountain Fun Pass.

  • Insider Tip: Make sure to position yourself near the windows on the way up to see the Gatlinburg skyline disappear behind the treeline!

More to Explore at Ober Mountain

While we were limited on time and only did the tram this trip, Ober Mountain is a year-round destination for adventure. When we head back, I definitely want to test out their ziplines and the Mountain Coaster. They also offer:

  • Skiing and Snowboarding (Winter)

  • Wildlife Habitat (See bears and river otters!)

  • Ice Skating (Indoor rink available year-round)

  • Summer Tubing and Alpine Slides

If you are looking to create unforgettable family memories and see the Smokies from a whole new vantage point, The Gatlinburg Tram is a must-visit. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and high-altitude excitement!
