Coppertone has a great tool that you can use to find out your Local UV Index. You can find your local UV Index by typing in your zip code here. From this, it will tell you what your UV Index is for the day, the temperature, and the recommended sun protection gear for the day.
For today, June 20, 2012 in Akron, Ohio, the UV Index is 10 Very High. It is recommended that you:
- wear UV blocking sunglasses
- wear sunscreen
- wear a hat
- wear protective clothing
- stay in the shade near midday
- stay in the shade to reduce time in the sun
- try to avoid the sun between 11-4pm.

To get the best protection from the sun, you need a sunscreen with Broad Spedctrum UVA/UVB Protection. The reason you need protection from both is because the sun produces 2 kinds of rays that can hurt your skin. UVB or Ultraviolet B is for your outer layer of skin, these rays cause sunburn, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. UVA or Ultraviolet A rays affect your skin at a deeper level and can also affect you with premature skin aging and skin cancer.
This might sound confusing and not all sunscreens provide protection against both. Basically, you need to read the labels. You can’t just get the SPF that you like, you need one with both UVA and UVB protection.
