We Painted Our House!

picture of Clopay doors review

This post has been a long time coming. We started painting the outside of our house in early July and are almost finished. We did it all ourselves, when I say “we”, I mostly mean my husband. 🙂 I helped but he did the majority of the job.

Power-Washing Our House

First, we power-washed the entire house in just one Saturday. Once it dried, we realized that it was still not clean. ugh. We washed it again with soap in the power washer and I scrubbed it down with sponges. Then, we rinsed the entire house. It was finally clean!

We are lucky that our house is designed to reflect the Frank Lloyd Wright style with a flat roof and a flat roof overhang between the two floors. This makes it easy to maintain the house like power-washing, painting, window-washing nd even hanging Christmas lights!

Painting Our House

We have tackled many do-it-yourself home projects over the years but have never painted our house before. We were not sure what to expect. What we did know was that we just had to paint our house. Not only was the color tired and starting to peel, but it was a stark, ugly contract to our new Clopay Entry Door. The new Craftsman Collection Entry Door is absolutely beautiful, it instantly changed the entire look and feel of our home. Coupled with the Clopay Canyon Ridge Collection Garage Door has turned an ordinary, unexciting looking home into something unique and desirable.  However, the rest of the exterior of the home needed to be updated to compliment our color choices and the beauty of the door. (Can you tell that I love my new doors or what?!)

I posted on our AkronOhioMoms.com Facebook page the photo below of all the color choices my husband and I were deciding on. There was a great response to the post varying from the lighted color to the darkest.

As you can see, we had tested out several different shades and colors of paint. Our original intent was to restore the natural redwood color to the house since it is built of redwood.  We finally found the perfect color from Sherwin Williams – Sierra Redwood.  We almost went with the tan, which is the 3rd panel up to the left of the door. I told my husband that we should try just one more paint color…..and then we found Sierra Redwood. I have no idea how we missed it before then!

My husband painted the entire house every Saturday in July and most of August. It was his thing, I guess. I trimmed, that is my thing because I’m a perfectionist when it comes to painting!

We are very pleased with the color of the house. It is exactly how my husband and I imagined it. I’m so lucky that my husband and I see eye-to-eye on so many things like this!

The Sherwin Williams Super Paint covered so well that we had left over paint,  a LOT of it! We could have gotten away with 1/2 of the paint that we purchased. So, getting the complimenting color for our Frank Lloyd Wright flat roof overhang was a bit tricky. Thankfully Mr. Matt Orley, my hubby is also a color expert (and graphic designer). He told the Sherwin Williams store how much of each color to add to our Sierra Redwood color to produce his very own color for the overhang. He did a great job too. It’s a beautiful complimentary color to both the house and the Fir Grain of our Clopay doors.

We are almost done painting. We still have the overhang on the second floor to paint and the trim around all the windows to paint. However, I couldn’t wait to show you the pictures as of now!

Our next project is to remove the second floor exterior door – which never should have been there in the first place! We are replacing it with a large stationary window.  Then, we will finish painting all of the trim work around all the windows. We will also be staining the deck, although eventually I hope to change it completely.

The Clopay doors have totally transformed our home into something beautiful. Painting the house to complement the doors was the best thing we could have done. It is truly a new house. I actually enjoy pulling into the driveway now, it feels like “home” to me now.  If you are looking to give your home an instant facelift and curb appeal, please check out Clopay Doors.
