One of my family’s favorite traditions is finding a way to make high-quality, restaurant-style meals right in our own kitchen, especially for holidays like Valentine’s Day since restaurants are over-crowded. Whether you are planning a romantic “date-in” or a fun family dinner, these Air Fryer Rice Paper Shrimp Dumplings are delicious! For anyone looking for a gluten-free and delicious appetizer, it’s a win-win!

- .25 cup San-J No Soy Tamari divided, pluse 1 Tbsp more
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 Tbsp chili crunch (or chili crisp) Or sub with Red Pepper Flakes + Oil: This is the easiest swap! Just mix about a teaspoon of red pepper flakes with a tablespoon of neutral oil (like avocado or vegetable oil)
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp sugar optional
- 1 lb raw shrimp peel and deveined
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 3 Green Onions finely minced
- 1 Tbsp Fresh Ginger grated
- .5 tsp black pepper
- 8 6" rice paper wrappers
- avocado or vegetable oil spray
- black and white sesame seeds optional, for garnish

- Create Your Dipping Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup San-J No Soy Tamari, rice vinegar, chili crunch (or your preferred substitute!), 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and a pinch of sugar if you like a hint of sweetness. Set this aside to let the flavors meld.
- Prep the Shrimp Filling: Place your shrimp into a food processor and pulse until it reaches a thick, paste-like consistency. If you don't have a processor handy, you can finely mince the shrimp by hand until it’s nearly a paste. Fold in the minced garlic, chopped green onions, fresh ginger, and black pepper until well combined.
- Wrap the Dumplings: Working with one rice paper sheet at a time, submerge it in warm water for about 4–5 seconds until pliable. Place 1–2 tablespoons of the shrimp mixture in the center. Fold the long sides over the filling, then tuck in the ends to create a secure seal. Set each completed dumpling on a tray while you finish the batch.
- Air Fry to Perfection: Lightly coat your air fryer basket with avocado oil spray. Arrange the dumplings in the basket, making sure they aren't touching so the air can circulate (you may need to work in batches!). Give the tops of the dumplings a quick spritz of oil. Air fry at 380°F for 12–15 minutes, making sure to flip them halfway through (around the 6-minute mark) for that "stunning" all-over crunch.
- Serve and Enjoy: Plate them while they are nice and hot! Serve with your prepared dipping sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a gorgeous, restaurant-quality presentation.
The Secret to Better Umami: Why We Choose San-J
If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know I’m a label-reader and watch everything that we eat. I’m always looking for clean, high-quality ingredients that don’t sacrifice flavor. That is why I am so impressed with San-J. They use fermentation methods passed down for centuries, which gives their sauces a deep, rich umami flavor that is worlds away from the cheap stuff you find on most grocery shelves.
For this recipe, we specifically used San-J No Soy Tamari. It is a soy-free and gluten-free alternative that tastes exactly like traditional premium tamari.

Why San-J No Soy Tamari is a Pantry Must-Have:
- It’s brewed with peas instead of soy, making it perfect for families with multiple food sensitivities.
- Deep Flavor: It provides that savory “umami” punch that makes these shrimp dumplings absolutely irresistible.
- Versatile: You can use it on so many dishes from stir-fries to meat marinades and all kinds of dipping sauces.
Common Questions About Rice Paper Dumplings
What should I serve these with? Pairing these crispy dumplings with my BIBIBOP Copycat Recipe creates the ultimate dining experience right at your own kitchen table! The irresistible crunch of the shrimp dumplings perfectly complements the tender chicken and crunchy vegetables, making for a wholesome, gluten-free feast that feels just as special as a night out. We love serving these with a side of stir-fried snap peas or a simple cucumber salad. It makes for a complete, healthy meal that feels like a total treat.

Can I make these ahead of time? I recommend prepping the filling early, but wait to wrap and air fry them until you’re ready to eat! That signature “San-J crunch” is best right out of the air fryer.
Is No Soy Tamari actually gluten-free? Yes! It is certified gluten-free, which gives me such peace of mind when serving friends or family with Celiac or gluten intolerances.
