Planning a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains can be overwhelming because there is simply so much to do in such a concentrated area. We visited for a few days during Spring Break and can’t wait to go back!
This 3 to 5-day itinerary balances the high-energy excitement of downtown Gatlinburg with the peaceful national park trails. Whether you are looking for 360-degree mountain views, world-class aquariums, or a challenging hike through native foliage, this guide provides a structured way to experience the very best of the region with your family.

Day 1: Heights and Underwater Depths
Morning: Gatlinburg SkyPark. Start your trip at the SkyLift to cross the SkyBridge, the longest pedestrian cable bridge in North America. The views of the Smokies from here are absolutely stunning.
Afternoon: Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies. This is a magical experience for families to see sharks, penguins, and vibrant aquatic ecosystems. As someone who has propagated aquatic plants for years, I found their setups incredibly impressive.
Evening: Gatlinburg Space Needle. Ride the glass elevators 400 feet up for a 360-degree view of the city lights against the mountain backdrop.
Day 2: The Heart of the Smokies
Morning: Hike to Chimney Tops. This 3.5-mile round-trip hike is a challenge but rewards you with gorgeous scenery. In March, we saw plenty of Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) and massive Rhododendron thickets.

- Afternoon: Ober Mountain. Take the Aerial Tramway up for classic family fun, from mountain coasters to scenic views.
- Evening: Downtown Exploration. Walk the Parkway and enjoy the high-energy charm of the city.
Day 3: Coasters and Oddities
Morning: Moonshine Mountain Coaster. This silent track coaster lets you control your own speed through the forest for a unique, thrilling experience.
Afternoon: Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Explore three floors of strange and unusual exhibits that are perfect for keeping everyone engaged.
Evening: The Village Shops. Visit this European-style area for unique finds and a quieter atmosphere.
Summer Bonus Days (What We Are Hitting Next!)
If you can spend 5 days in Gatlinburg, add these two bonus days as top priorities!
Day 4: Canopy Walks and Artisans
Anakeesta: I can’t wait to try the Treetop Skywalk, which features 800 feet of hanging bridges in the canopy.
Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair: This is a must-see to observe local masters creating pottery, jewelry, and more.
Hillbilly Golf: A witty and classic Gatlinburg tradition that we missed last time.
Day 5: River Rafting and Star Cars
Smoky Mountain Outdoors (SMO) Rafting: We are looking forward to some whitewater action on the Pigeon River.
Hollywood Star Cars Museum: Seeing iconic vehicles like the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 is high on our list.
Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC): This is the ultimate stop for outdoor gear and climbing practice.
Family-Friendly Hikes (Under 5 Miles)
Chimney Tops Trail (3.5 Miles): A steep climb with a stunning payout at the overlook.

Chimney Tops Trail at The Great Smokey Mountains Laurel Falls Trail (2.6 Miles): An extremely popular paved trail that leads to an 80-foot waterfall.

Porters Creek Trail (4 Miles): Known for spectacular wildflowers and old-growth forests.

Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail (0.5 Miles): A flat, paved loop perfect for families with strollers.
Gatlinburg Trail (3.9 Miles): A flat path running alongside the Little Pigeon River.
Even though we saw so much in March, we barely scratched the surface of what this area has to offer. My whole family is already talking about heading back this summer to hit everything we missed! Find out more things to do in Gatlinburg on their official website.
